Magical Innovation Centre: The Grand Opening

It's evening in Richmond and the grand opening of the Magical Innovation Centre is about to begin. Doors open at 6.30pm with the event closing at 10pm. This is a black tie event, so get out your evening gowns and tuxedos. You won't be allowed in if you're wearing trainers or jeans.

Fae are forbidden from entering. Any fae who wish to sneak in must do so under a glamour and are likely to be discovered and kicked out if they linger for too long. Alternatively, they could pretend to be in service to one of the witches attending the event, if they have any witch allies willing to do that. Fae already in service to Circle Daybreak are the exception to the rule and this will be the first Daybreak event where a number of witches in attendance will be accompanied by their familiars in various forms. Ever since Samantha took her crown as Mother of Witches with a certain cat on her lap, familiars have started to become fashionable again.

Order of Events
6.30-7pm: Doors open
The first half hour allows time for guests to arrive and mingle. There's strict security around the centre: everyone who enters must sign in and get a name badge at the reception desk.

7-7.30pm: Samantha's speech
Standing on the staircase in the foyer, the Mother of Witches will address her audience with a speech to announce the opening of the centre.

7.30-8.30pm: Tour of the centre
During this hour, guests can join a tour of the centre. There will be three tours of around fifteen minutes each. Guests will be shown the following:

• Starting in the main foyer, the tour guide will give a brief overview of the centre's purpose.
• Next, the Potions Lab, which looks very much like any modern lab except that the bottles on display are magical rather than chemical.
• Then, the Pentacle Room which is an empty classroom with several intricate pentacles drawn on the floor. Cabinets along one wall hold shelves of herbs and charms that are used to strengthen or protect the pentacles, as well as shelves of spellbooks. An empty iron bird cage sits on one of the cabinets. This room is where witches can work together to perform powerful magic or to summon fae from the Other Realm.
• Then, the Botanical Garden which is what it sounds like. Herbs and plants of many kinds are grown here, and there are tables where witches can cut and dry the plants to prepare them for use in spellcraft and potion-making.
• Finally, the Magic Lab which looks very much like the Potions Lab except that there's more space. This is where witches will experiment with creating new spells.

The tour is guided and guests may only spend a limited amount of time in each room. They can't go back to the rooms after they're closed; security is tight and anyone trying to sneak around will be quickly spotted.

8.30-10pm: Networking
The rest of the event is open for mingling. There are information stands in the main foyer where witches are handing out leaflets outlining the purpose of the centre and inviting witches to join. If you're not a witch, you can still look and ask questions, but you can't register your interest to work or study at the centre. There's also a screen playing an artfully shot video of Samantha and several young witches looking alternately mystical and windswept on a moor, then clever and industrious in one of the laboratories. Tradition meets the modern world.

Coffee, champagne and canapes are all available, and are served by handsome fae waiters dressed in sparkly blue tuxedos. Despite several setbacks (none of which will be mentioned by Samantha or any of the staff) including the recent loss of Croydon to the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, it seems that Circle Daybreak is still intent on portraying an image of success. The Daybreak fae here are tame, well-mannered and subservient. Everything is under control.

That is absolutely one of the saddest things he's ever heard. It's one thing to be disinterested, but if that's been her experience of magic so far it's absolutely tragic.

"Is that the only way anyone's tried to teach you?" He asks, totally ignoring the question of whether or not he's a witch, "I'm so sorry to hear that."

"My mother said it's the way proper witches learn. Boring!" Lydia sighs. "There are so many more interesting things to do with life than study, study, study. Now, my sister, Mary - she's into all that. But I like going out, meeting people, having a laugh, you know?" She shrugs.

"But I'm not at home any more! I can do what I want now!"

Ah, that explains it. She's a teenager.

"That's a shame-- your mother, I mean. Not that you left home," Keiran laughs, shaking his head, and he gestures vaguely at the party; at witches who obviously feel differently. "Magic is supposed to be... Well, there's a reason we call things that make you feel good magical, right?"

"Leaving home is definitely not a shame!" Lydia laughs in agreement.

"So you are a witch? Do you work with Samantha then? She said I'm not talented enough to join her coven."

"No, god no." Work with Samantha? He'd rather die. "She's a... Skilled witch, but I think we have some pretty serious ideological differences."

"Oh." Well, that's awkward. "I don't think I like her very much." Lydia says, bluntly, just to add to it.
"She is an undeniable snob, I think. It's silly. She just wanted to show off to all those photographers with me. I don't think she cared that she humiliated me even one single gram."

And when the pot calls the kettle black, there's not much more to be said!

Keiran laughs then, shaking his head a little. He tilts his head and lowers his voice a little, like he's sharing a secret, and glances at Samantha talking with some wealthy benefactor or other.

"I don't think she cares much about humiliating anyone."

(Sorry moderation week at work has been horrendous!)

Lydia replies with a grumpy sulk and a determined fold of her arms. "Yeah, well, she hasn't met Lydia Bennet properly yet. I am determined that I shall have the last laugh. Maybe I'll just study so hard that I'll become more powerful than her."

She pauses for a second before chuckling. As if she can work that hard for a long period. "Or not. But she won't forget me."

"So Lydia Bennet's a name to watch out for?" Keiran asks, a little teasing and a easy smile. This kid is obviously not used to being told anything negative, but he doubts she has it in her to do anything that'll really make Samantha regret knowing her.

[personal profile] morevacant 2017-05-27 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Definitely!" She smirks. Is she serious? Well, of course… but she's not thinking of magic, particularly.
"So what do you do if you don't work for her?" She asks after taking a sip of her drink.

"I'm a researcher," he raises his eyebrows as if to say 'yes, seriously,' because he's pretty sure he can feel the boredom already, "thought I might as well see what all the hubub's about."

[personal profile] morevacant 2017-06-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He can read minds. That's impressive. Lydia makes a face. "No wonder you're lecturing me, hey?" she laughs. "I don't think I could do a boring job like that. I want to do something fun."

She shrugs. "So is it everything you hoped? It's certainly grand, isn't it?"

[personal profile] falsify 2017-06-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
He puts a hand on his heart at the mention of lecturing, affecting a wounded expression with a laugh.

"Ostentatious, maybe." Somebody's not impressed, and he frowns in thought, "a lot of glitz and no substance."

[personal profile] morevacant 2017-06-11 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe a bit like Samantha then?" Lydia laughs too. "At least it is pretty, though. Things are worse if they have nothing in them and they're ugly. My mother said that's what a woman's job is, to look pretty. Maybe it's the same for buildings, too?"

[personal profile] falsify 2017-06-11 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow there's... There's just so much wrong with that sentence he doesn't know where to start, so Keiran forces a laugh instead. Like she's told a funny joke.

"Well the best have both, don't they?" Both women and buildings, that is. Keiran tilts his head thoughtfully, "y'know, instead of being full of grime and empty promises."

A pause, and he winks, "like Samantha."

"You're funny," she replies, quite positively twinkling at the obviously important man being as rude as she is about their gracious host.

"Maybe someone really will knock her down. I don't think a bulldozer would be effective though."

She thinks for a moment. "Are you in a coven? I don't have one, and Samantha wouldn't let me join hers. She only takes talented witches."

[personal profile] falsify 2017-06-30 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not," he shakes his head, almost as if he feels a little bad he can't help her out there, "but there's loads around. I don't think there's much you wanna learn from someone like her anyway."
morevacant: (Default)

[personal profile] morevacant 2017-06-30 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Lydia shrugs. "I don't even care. I just want a good time, and I bet being in her coven would get me an invite to the best parties." And that is all Lydia is bothered about.

Well, there goes whatever sympathy he had, but Kieran smiles and nods instead. He's not about to start telling some kid why she should be thinking about more than just partying, especially when he doesn't actually care, and definitely not at a public affair like this.

"I should go before my date starts to think I've left him for somebody cuter and younger," he says instead, let her have a nice little ego boost too before he leaves, why not. "Have a good night, yeah?"
