Magical Innovation Centre: The Grand Opening
It's evening in Richmond and the grand opening of the Magical Innovation Centre is about to begin. Doors open at 6.30pm with the event closing at 10pm. This is a black tie event, so get out your evening gowns and tuxedos. You won't be allowed in if you're wearing trainers or jeans.
Fae are forbidden from entering. Any fae who wish to sneak in must do so under a glamour and are likely to be discovered and kicked out if they linger for too long. Alternatively, they could pretend to be in service to one of the witches attending the event, if they have any witch allies willing to do that. Fae already in service to Circle Daybreak are the exception to the rule and this will be the first Daybreak event where a number of witches in attendance will be accompanied by their familiars in various forms. Ever since Samantha took her crown as Mother of Witches with a certain cat on her lap, familiars have started to become fashionable again.
Order of Events
6.30-7pm: Doors open
The first half hour allows time for guests to arrive and mingle. There's strict security around the centre: everyone who enters must sign in and get a name badge at the reception desk.
7-7.30pm: Samantha's speech
Standing on the staircase in the foyer, the Mother of Witches will address her audience with a speech to announce the opening of the centre.
7.30-8.30pm: Tour of the centre
During this hour, guests can join a tour of the centre. There will be three tours of around fifteen minutes each. Guests will be shown the following:
• Starting in the main foyer, the tour guide will give a brief overview of the centre's purpose.
• Next, the Potions Lab, which looks very much like any modern lab except that the bottles on display are magical rather than chemical.
• Then, the Pentacle Room which is an empty classroom with several intricate pentacles drawn on the floor. Cabinets along one wall hold shelves of herbs and charms that are used to strengthen or protect the pentacles, as well as shelves of spellbooks. An empty iron bird cage sits on one of the cabinets. This room is where witches can work together to perform powerful magic or to summon fae from the Other Realm.
• Then, the Botanical Garden which is what it sounds like. Herbs and plants of many kinds are grown here, and there are tables where witches can cut and dry the plants to prepare them for use in spellcraft and potion-making.
• Finally, the Magic Lab which looks very much like the Potions Lab except that there's more space. This is where witches will experiment with creating new spells.
The tour is guided and guests may only spend a limited amount of time in each room. They can't go back to the rooms after they're closed; security is tight and anyone trying to sneak around will be quickly spotted.
8.30-10pm: Networking
The rest of the event is open for mingling. There are information stands in the main foyer where witches are handing out leaflets outlining the purpose of the centre and inviting witches to join. If you're not a witch, you can still look and ask questions, but you can't register your interest to work or study at the centre. There's also a screen playing an artfully shot video of Samantha and several young witches looking alternately mystical and windswept on a moor, then clever and industrious in one of the laboratories. Tradition meets the modern world.
Coffee, champagne and canapes are all available, and are served by handsome fae waiters dressed in sparkly blue tuxedos. Despite several setbacks (none of which will be mentioned by Samantha or any of the staff) including the recent loss of Croydon to the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, it seems that Circle Daybreak is still intent on portraying an image of success. The Daybreak fae here are tame, well-mannered and subservient. Everything is under control.

"I'm just a rich old man with a chip on his shoulder. I'm not sure how much use I could be." Though they both know that there's more to him than that. He has a considerable history of subterfuge and seizing power, and a frightening amount of ambition. He knows he's on the cusp of something great. He just hasn't figured out who he needs to stab in the back just yet to get it.

"He underplayed it, if anything. I don't think he mentioned anything about immortality in there, did he?" he asks, pretending to ponder over it.
"But what do you think they'll write about you?"
no subject
There must be something. She knows it.

"You know that I'm only a marquess. How much do you think it would cost to buy a position in this town? Four or five million?" Probably about the amount he's donating to the Centre, he presumes. At least, that's what he'll argue. "It could be helpful having an ally with you when the grown ups talk." Basically, he wants power and a seat at the table.
no subject
"Depends on the position." She flicks a stray lock of hair over her shoulder and folds her arms. "And whether it can be bought. Isn't Jean-Claude already rich?"
Like Cesare, she imagines that most old vampires would have enough money to throw around that bribery wouldn't work. And if recent history is anything to go by, vampires in the Islington Nest get to the top through murder, not money.

"But if I were to have a change of heart, switch my faction, things would be a lot more interesting." He knows it's a massive risk to tell Samantha this, but he knows he needs to lay everything out on the table. She did it for him, now he can do it for her.
no subject
"And go where?"
no subject
"Anywhere that a space opens up. How's Sylvia doing?" he asks meaningfully. "Clearly she has retiring on her mind..." Cesare isn't quite sure if Sylvia gave up her position as Mother of Witches of her own volition, or if Samantha forced it from her. Either way, it means that Sylvia's power is slipping. Cesare is more than happy to give her another push.

This time she's genuinely shocked. Wow. He can't mean... Wow. So he loses the Vampire Representative vote and decides to aim higher? Or is he talking about the school? Somehow she finds it hard to picture Cesare running a school.
no subject
"I am entirely serious. Does that worry you?" he asks, his gaze fixed on her. If she wants to back out now then that's fine by him. It would be disappointing but he'll just have to find another route through.
no subject
She brushes his arm briefly, to show that she's not horrified by this. She just needs to think. It's... a lot to take in. All the implications. The possibilities. Not that the thought of removing Sylvia hasn't crossed her mind before, but not like this.
Samantha turns away, stepping between the pentacles. She crouches down by one of them, laying her hand on the outside of the circle, muttering under her breath. The circle glows for a moment, its power flowing into her, easing the tension in her shoulders. She hadn't realised how fast her heart was beating. So what to do?
Soothed by the presence of the pentacle, Samantha stands up to face Cesare again. "It's the Presidency you want, right?"
Not the school. That's her guess.
no subject
When she turns back to him, he nods.
"Might as well aim high, right?" If you don't try for something, you'll never get it, after all.

Saying it like that gives her confidence. He might be a five hundred year old plus vampire, but she is the Mother of Witches. They're on equal footing here and this is her turf. She approaches him with something of a gleam in her eye.
"I want my five million. No strings. And I want some time to think, so contact me when the transaction is done. Maybe ask me out for dinner." She smiles, offering a playful shrug. "I like to be wooed."
She has to decide first whether she's willing to help him with this. It's a huge risk. And she has to decide whether it's worth it. The feeling in her gut says yes. It's exciting. But she's got enough sense not to immediately jump in headfirst. She can take some time to think it through.
no subject
"Don't think for too long," he teases. Not because he'll replace her or retract the offer (though there is risk of that if she strings him along), but because he's looking forward to the prospect of dinner with her. He likes her ambition. He finds that very attractive indeed. He's looking forward to more sparring.
He takes a step back and nods his head in a half bow.
"I'll talk with you soon," he says in a firm statement of confidence. This may all fall though, but he's decided not to acknowledge that.

It's not a good idea for people to see them returning to the foyer together. Tongues will wag. She walks over to the door with him, then stops there.
"I'll see you around."
And that is a promise. She has his number now and she'll give him the details of where to send the money. After that... Yeah, she'll be up for a date. They can see where this goes.
