Magical Innovation Centre: The Grand Opening
It's evening in Richmond and the grand opening of the Magical Innovation Centre is about to begin. Doors open at 6.30pm with the event closing at 10pm. This is a black tie event, so get out your evening gowns and tuxedos. You won't be allowed in if you're wearing trainers or jeans.
Fae are forbidden from entering. Any fae who wish to sneak in must do so under a glamour and are likely to be discovered and kicked out if they linger for too long. Alternatively, they could pretend to be in service to one of the witches attending the event, if they have any witch allies willing to do that. Fae already in service to Circle Daybreak are the exception to the rule and this will be the first Daybreak event where a number of witches in attendance will be accompanied by their familiars in various forms. Ever since Samantha took her crown as Mother of Witches with a certain cat on her lap, familiars have started to become fashionable again.
Order of Events
6.30-7pm: Doors open
The first half hour allows time for guests to arrive and mingle. There's strict security around the centre: everyone who enters must sign in and get a name badge at the reception desk.
7-7.30pm: Samantha's speech
Standing on the staircase in the foyer, the Mother of Witches will address her audience with a speech to announce the opening of the centre.
7.30-8.30pm: Tour of the centre
During this hour, guests can join a tour of the centre. There will be three tours of around fifteen minutes each. Guests will be shown the following:
• Starting in the main foyer, the tour guide will give a brief overview of the centre's purpose.
• Next, the Potions Lab, which looks very much like any modern lab except that the bottles on display are magical rather than chemical.
• Then, the Pentacle Room which is an empty classroom with several intricate pentacles drawn on the floor. Cabinets along one wall hold shelves of herbs and charms that are used to strengthen or protect the pentacles, as well as shelves of spellbooks. An empty iron bird cage sits on one of the cabinets. This room is where witches can work together to perform powerful magic or to summon fae from the Other Realm.
• Then, the Botanical Garden which is what it sounds like. Herbs and plants of many kinds are grown here, and there are tables where witches can cut and dry the plants to prepare them for use in spellcraft and potion-making.
• Finally, the Magic Lab which looks very much like the Potions Lab except that there's more space. This is where witches will experiment with creating new spells.
The tour is guided and guests may only spend a limited amount of time in each room. They can't go back to the rooms after they're closed; security is tight and anyone trying to sneak around will be quickly spotted.
8.30-10pm: Networking
The rest of the event is open for mingling. There are information stands in the main foyer where witches are handing out leaflets outlining the purpose of the centre and inviting witches to join. If you're not a witch, you can still look and ask questions, but you can't register your interest to work or study at the centre. There's also a screen playing an artfully shot video of Samantha and several young witches looking alternately mystical and windswept on a moor, then clever and industrious in one of the laboratories. Tradition meets the modern world.
Coffee, champagne and canapes are all available, and are served by handsome fae waiters dressed in sparkly blue tuxedos. Despite several setbacks (none of which will be mentioned by Samantha or any of the staff) including the recent loss of Croydon to the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, it seems that Circle Daybreak is still intent on portraying an image of success. The Daybreak fae here are tame, well-mannered and subservient. Everything is under control.

She has no idea who Lydia is.

"I've just moved down to London. I've just joined… We're quite well known in Hertfordshire, actually."
no subject
There are many covens in Circle Daybreak. She doesn't know every witch personally, especially not those who have recently come to live in the city. She's guessing that Lydia is a student and that's why she's moved here. Even though they've suffered some hardships lately, London is still an attractive prospect for young witches across the country and outside of it too.
no subject
"Well, it's not that I'm not interested, but… well, I've not been here that long yet, and…" She smiles sheepishly. "I dare say you can point me in the right direction, can't you?"
no subject
Didn't she get asked to help out a young witch who had recently moved to London a few weeks ago? Something about this situation is ringing a bell, but that must have been resolved by now.
no subject
"I really liked what you said, though. About the innovative magic. I like that. My mother always made magic so boring, all books and study. It's boring. Magic should be more fun, right?"
no subject
"No, magic is... Magic is the purest form of joy that a witch can achieve." She bites her lip. "Okay sweetheart, come here. Let me show you something."
She holds out her hand. Disengaged as Lydia seems, maybe this is a chance to change that. Isn't that why she became Mother of Witches in the first place?
no subject
"It'd be an honour." Not really, but a bit of flattery goes a long way in Lydia's experience.

She doesn't take Lydia far, just behind the reception desk where there's an open space and, coincidentally, a photographer ready to capture what happens next. Here she takes both of Lydia's hands so that they're standing opposite each other.
"Close your eyes," Samantha instructs her. "Let the power flow through you."
Sensing that something is about to happen, people are starting to gather around to watch. Samantha closes her eyes and murmurs the start of an incantation under her breath. She's drawing power from the fae waiters in the room and from her own familiar. Lydia should be able to sense it too: a surge of energy in the air, a warmth in their skin. Samantha loves this feeling, that sense of power and potential. And that sense of connection too, usually with the coven she practises with, but in this case with the girl opposite her.
A gust of wind swirls around them. The energy forms into an invisible disc at their feet, and slowly, steadily, they rise into the air.
Samantha grins. "Open your eyes."
It's a simple levitation spell, a party trick that any witch can learn, but this is a particularly potent one with the extra magic she's drawing from the fae. And levitating is always fun.
no subject
Her smile, calculated before, relaxes into a genuine grin.
She opens her eyes. "Wow."
It's not even the levitation. That's fun, sure, but it's the feeling that's influencing her.
"Is this what magic is? Proper magic?'
no subject
Real, augmented magic. That kind of power can only be drawn from other living things. Witches practise in covens because it's only when they stand together and draw from each other that they can perform the most powerful spells.
The crowd around them applaud while the photographer snaps a few pictures. It's just a bit of fun and Samantha lets the power fade slowly, descending gently back to the ground. As a PR stunt, she reckons it will look pretty cute.
She lets go of Lydia's hands, tossing back her hair with a smile. "If you want to practise magic like that, join a coven. I promise you won't regret it."
She won't get that feeling practising alone. It's why witches are so keen on group events and ceremonies, any excuse to get a coven or covens together. Performing magic in a circle with a group of witches she knows and loves, feeling that sense of connection with each other and with the world... there's nothing quite like it. Samantha would never give that up.

She smiles happily, and steps closer. "Thank you, Ma'am. I don't think I'll forget that experience."
Meaning, in other words, that she hopes that Samantha won't forget her either. She thinks briefly about asking Nancy, and joining whatever coven Nancy is a member of… but almost as quickly as the thought comes, it disappears. Nancy's a nice girl, and good for a laugh on the town, but if Lydia is going to be someone, she needs to be around people.
"I want to join yours. I want to learn from the best."
no subject
"My coven is in great demand," she replies, because unfortunately she does have to hedge her bets on this one. "You'll have to pass a test to join. Would you like to apply?"
Naturally, Samantha's coven is comprised of only the most powerful and talented witches. She accepts only the best.

She glances back at the cameras. The photographers are loving this, and she loves it too. Imagine the papers. She's going to be famous. Except, she needs this to go right. She turns away slightly.
"Look. My father can pay. I can be useful. Trust me. Four sisters - I know what I'm doing. Please, Ma'am. I want to learn from the best."
She glances back at the waiting press, her round eyes filling with crocodile tears, her cheeks blushed with worry. But safe with her back to them, the expression hardens and her voice drops to barely a whisper. "Think how good it'll look," she mutters.
no subject
"Don't play games with me, sweetheart." Her voice is equally soft. At once she straightens up, placing an arm around Lydia's shoulder. "There's a coven out there for every witch. Let's go take a look."
And she takes Lydia's arm to walk her away, dispersing the crowd around them.
no subject
"I just thought - you know? London and everything? And my mother would be so pleased to hear you'd taken me under your wing. She's forever nagging me to practice. I thought maybe a bit of life in the party, you know?" She smiles hopefully at Samantha. It's just embarrassing to be refused now.
no subject
She stops them by the staircase, looking Lydia in the eye. Whatever the girl thought she was doing, she had put Samantha in a difficult and unfair position, and that's never something Samantha is going to accept.
no subject
Lydia pouts. She's not used to being refused by anyone except Lizzie, and that's just Lizzie being Lizzie and boring.
"Fine." She folds her arms, quite obviously fed up. "I suppose it's your loss. Ma'am."
no subject
If she doesn't... her loss. She tried.
no subject
She could have made a good minion, but rejected in front of the crowds, in front of photographers? Lydia's embarrassed, and she doesn't like it one bit.
"Whatever," she mutters.
She slopes off, mutinous. It's time to find Nancy after all.
