The greater good + [open!]
At exactly 7pm on Thursday 8th October, Sylvia says, "Come in."
If he doesn't know the way yet, Lancelot will have been escorted to her office in the Night Council headquarters. Once he gets there, he's on his own. Sylvia is smiling when he enters, because she has good news to deliver. She has a task for him too, but that can wait. Good news first.

Anyone want to thread with Sylvia this month? PM me and we'll work something out!

You helped a lot of witches, she says, and his eyes drop down immediately. Uncomfortable, not just under the praise but under the memory too.
"I only wish I could have helped more," he admits, and lifts his eyes to her again -- brow furrowed in concern. "For that I am sorry. You have taught me a lot, offered me much, and I hope I can better repay that in future."

Because it's the perfect segue to...
She edges slightly forward in her seat. "We choose Guardians for the skills and knowledge that they can bring to the job. Loyal Guardians always get the job done. And for some of our more sensitive tasks, well, those are only given to our most trusted Guardians. Now who do you think that sounds like?" There's a bit of a mischievous twinkle in her eyes, but she only pauses a moment before answering her question for him. "You'd like to have the chance to do more. So I'm going to raise your security clearance – which comes with a nice pay rise, by the way, but you can take a look at your revised contract later – and then we can get down to business. Okay?"
He needs to say yes, of course, for this to work. Not that she's expecting him to refuse.

He blinks up in surprise, sits for a second with his mouth open to protest before he closes it. To reject, to demur too far, would be rude. Yet Lancelot cannot think of why he would deserve such a thing. Surely he is too new to this? Surely he is not good enough yet?
"I..."
He doesn't know what to say, yet he cannot simply say nothing. Humility is important but so is grace. So he nods, fractionally, accepting her decision.
"Of course. If that is what you wish then I will do my best to make sure I live up to your expectations."

Straight to business. He'll have a chance very soon to live up to her expectations, as it were. She opens the folder in her lap, taking out an ordinary sheet of paper. This she passes over to Lancelot. Printed on the paper is a simple table containing the following information: names, phone numbers, home addresses, jobs and work addresses, and notes about family members (siblings, parents, children). Most of the information is comprehensive, except for two names at the bottom: Nancy and Kenzi. These have no information other than the first names.
"These are the names of all the members of the Shadow Coven, which is part of Circle Midnight." She gives him a few moments to skim through it, leaning back in her seat. "What do you know about Circle Midnight?"
no subject
"Forgive me if my understanding is not... comprehensive," he begins, "but -- I am lead to understand that they... do not follow to same laws that Daybreak does? That they practice what is seen as dark magic, are perhaps... less careful, more... wild in their approach?"
He looks up again, hesitant -- watching her expression for clues to see if he is saying the right thing. Yet some of the names on this paper -- he thinks... he recognises them. Could they be common names? Of course they would. Yet Lancelot isn't sure he believes in coincidence anymore.

She crosses her legs, her tone matter-of-fact.
"Abigail Widdowson is their leader." She's the first name on the list. "She is the only one who has openly declared herself. The rest practise in secret, either posing as Daybreak witches or staying away from other covens altogether. We know who most of them are, now, so that we can keep an eye on them, make sure we put a stop to any dangerous magic as early as possible. There are still two names on the list we haven't identified. I'd like you to help."
no subject
"If they are misguided," Lancelot begins, a little cautious still, "Can we help them?"
He lifts his eyes up to her, studies her with an earnest sort of intensity.
"I understand some of them may not wish it, but... this girl," and here he rests a finger by Nancy's name. "I think I know who she is. I spoke to her once. She did not strike me as... malicious, only sad."
no subject
"Now that is an excellent start. And if you can find out whether she knows a Kenzi, we may be getting somewhere. I do want to help them. But we can only do that if we know who they are, and if we understand why they feel that they have to resort to dark magic. Sometimes people are desperate or feel as though they have no other choice. Sometimes they make a deal with a fae that they later regret, and become trapped by it. But if we can bring any of them back over to Daybreak... it's worth a try." Her tone is almost as earnest as his. "I want you to be our advocate. You believe in Daybreak, in our principles, but you're not a witch. So you won't be a rival, or a threat. I think they'll find you quite approachable."
She gives a crooked smile. Sylvia is not unaware of the fact that she's also choosing to send an attractive young man to charm these young women, and Lancelot is virtually impossible to dislike. How can they resist?
no subject
"Nancy Fagin," he offers softly. "She's definitely Midnight. She's... a street walker, sells her blood too. Was cursed last I saw her to speak only the truth, or else I am not so sure she would have been so... open about that. I do not know anything about what coven she might be in, I'm afraid, only... that she has friends among the fae."
He frowns in thought, turning over his memories of her a moment.
"I can talk to her. I know a few places she might be, she should not be too hard to find, but... she is -- bitter. Pessimistic. I think she will be hard to convince."
no subject
"The name Nancy was given as a member of the Shadow Coven," she says. "I should think this girl fits. And if by some coincidence we've found a different Nancy – well, that's a second Midnight coven uncovered, which merits further investigation. But let's hope it's the first. Talk to her. I'm not asking you to do a hard sell. Just... look out for her. Girls trapped in situations like this, you can offer them support and show them the door that will lead them out, but they have to walk through it themselves."
no subject
"I will do my best," he assures her, "and hope they can see reason. You are kind to offer help to them."
Lancelot's eyes flick down to the paper again for a second, thinking.
"... This other girl -- Faolan has worked as a private investigator as well as a hunter. It might be worth asking him to look into this too, he is a little better at... subtle than I might be, if you'd rather it not known you were looking."
After all, Lancelot is perfectly aware of his own shortcomings -- and equally aware that not all things can be achieved through gentle conversation and coaxing. Sylvia will want results, and it is his job to see she ultimately has them.
no subject
"Good idea. I'll certainly consider it." She smiles. "All right, now is there anything else you need before I send you off to get started?"
Any other questions?
no subject
Lancelot holds up the list, arches an eyebrow questioningly.
"Or could you send me a copy, perhaps? It might be useful to have, if the names come up again."
Clue him in when a conversation might be leading somewhere useful, or when he is being told something worth remembering.
no subject
Because she promised Abigail Widdowson that the identities of her coven members would remain a secret. Abigail has already proven herself to be reckless and impulsive; it would only take one slip for her to react against a perceived threat and for the entire situation to descend into chaos.
Sylvia won't let that happen. She stands, waiting for Lancelot to do the same.
no subject
He pushes up to his feet with her, inclines his head slightly again and offers her again.
"Thank you again. I will not disappoint you, I swear it."
no subject
And stay safe. She doesn't say that, but she's thinking it. Lancelot might not imagine that a young woman from an underground coven could be a threat, but Sylvia knows otherwise. If anything, she thinks his lack of guile will protect him. The less he has to hide, the better.
